Au XVIIIe siècle, l’aristocratie britannique se fournissait déjà en sucre des Indes Occidentales. A cette époque où la mondialisation connaissait ses premiers balbutiements, il n'était pas rare qu'un produit parcoure la moitié du globe pour témoigner de la gloire de l’Empire et son industrie… mais cela avait un prix. Car, oui, transporter un objet par-delà les océans coûte de l’argent.

Pourtant aujourd’hui nous profitons de produits venus des quatre coins du monde sans même nous en apercevoir. Je peux aller dans un magasin chercher de quoi préparer mon repas du soir et rentrer chez moi avec des souvenirs de cinq pays différents. Les prix sont bas et l'offre omniprésente. Que s’est-il passé ?

C’est d'autant plus surprenant que certains de ces articles sont aussi produits localement mais coûtent plus cher que leur version importée. En partant du principe que la qualité est la même, comment expliquer que le coût du transport ne tire pas vers le haut les prix des produits importés ?

La réponse est simple : un prix ne ne s’exprime pas uniquement de façon monétaire. Comment les Grandes Pyramides, la Muraille de Chine ou les chemins de fer transcontinentaux ont-ils pu être construits sans mettre en faillite les États ? Facile : ces projets ont été nourris de sacrifices humains jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient achevés. La mort et les souffrances peuvent fort bien remplacer l'argent. De la même façon, le coût du transport des produits importés est souvent compensé par l'exploitation de travailleurs étrangers, qui peinent pour un salaire et dans des conditions qui ne seraient pas acceptables localement.

Pour certains, il ne s’agit que d’une question d’offre et de demande. Ces travailleurs acceptent librement un contrat parce que la demande d’emploi est élevée. Le philosophe John Rawls pourrait leur répondre qu’accepter librement un contrat ne suffit pas à le rendre équitable et juste. Car, dit-il, les deux parties n’ont pas nécessairement la même liberté d’accepter ou non l’échange et la même connaissance du marché - un peu comme un enfant qui accepterait d’échanger ses timbres avec un adulte opportuniste.

Quand nous achetons un produit local, nous sommes nombreux à nous étonner de son prix élevé par rapport aux produits importés low-cost auxquels nous sommes habitués. Mais en réalité même si le coût monétaire de ces produits est bas, nous payons un prix bien plus élevé en nourrissant des injustices. En choisissant de les acheter alors que des alternatives existent, nous apportons notre soutien à la façon dont il ont été fabriqués. C’est peut-être désagréable à entendre mais un produit responsable nous coûtera toujours un peu plus d’argent, nous devrions l’accepter et même le revendiquer : bâtir une société plus juste a un prix.
